North Beach Volleyball - Seattle
Volleyball Rules

General Rules
  • Official house ball for Coed 4's is the Wilson AVP official game volleyball. The official house ball
for the doubles leagues is the Spalding King of the Beach volleyball.
  • Absolutely no spitting or bodily fluids on the courts indoors, we don’t have the luxury of rain and
high tides to flush out the sand.
  • No food or drinks (other that water on the courts)

League Rules
  • Coed leagues - minimum one woman, 2 men maximum (except flex league) on a team
  • No woman hit rule
  • Rally scoring - 3 games to 21 points
  • No spiking, blocking, or volleying a serve
  • Ball may be hit with any part of the body
  • Players must maintain service rotation, but players do not have to rotate position
  • You may serve anywhere along the back line within the sidelines
  • Players are allowed 2 tosses of the ball to serve as long as there is no contact on the first attempt
  • No open hand dinks (you cannot use your finger tips to redirect the ball when it is going over the
    net)
  • Serves can not be received with two hands that are not connected
  • Receiving a ball coming over the net with an overhead open hand set is not allowed in any of our
leagues or tournaments. So that means roll shots, forearm passes, chips, pokes, or any hit that
goes up before it goes down can NOT be received with an overhead open hand set.
  • Receiving the a ball coming over the net with an open handed dig or overhead open hand set is
LEGAL only when receiving a HARD DRIVEN ball that has a downward trajectory after it was hit.
  • Roll shots must be received with a pass, poke, two connected hands and NOT with an open
    hand set
  • Setting the ball over the net with an open hand set is only allowed if your shoulders are square
with the direction of the path of the ball. An open hand set that unintentionally goes over the net is
usually an indication of a bad set . We encourage people to practice hand setting and the quality
of the hand set depends on the particular league. Please call bad sets on yourself or your team
but continue playing even if you think there was a bad set by the opposing team.
  • A block counts as a touch - the blocker can dig his block for the second touch, but the next
contact must send the ball over the net
  • The antennaes (and the vertical line extending from the top of the antenna) are out of bounds
  • All boundaries, meshing around court, roofs, poles, etc., are out of bounds
  • Ball is in if it makes any contact with the boundary lines.
  • Any player who participates in a reckless manor runs the risk of suspension from game by North
Beach staff if the staff believe they could cause injury to themselves or someone else, one
warning may or may not be given.
  • North Beach staff also has the right to suspend or eject anyone at our discretion (not just for
    unsafe behavior).
  • Lifts and carries are NOT allowed....please call this on yourselves
  • Touching the net at ANY time during play is not allowed....please call net violations on yourselves
  • Going under the net IS allowed as long as it doesn't interfere with the play.  Please be conscious
of players on both sides of the net!
  • We are all out there to have fun so if there are any disputes, please replay the point.  Any conflict
resolved by North Beach Volleyball staff will require 3 laps around the court, 20 push ups, a pint
of beer, and a shot of tequila!
